Selection of HMC&E caps
Shown below are a selection of caps formerly worn by HM Customs & Excise personnel. The variety of headwear available has increased over the years to reflect the various tasks being undertaken. In years gone by, the uniform caps featuring the gold bullion laurel leaves and silver colour portcullis were pretty much what all the travelling public saw as they entered and left the UK. The crown above the portcullis has changed periodically dependent on whether a King’s Crown or a Queens Crown was appropriate.
As the years moved on different hasts were introduced to aid the visibility and comfort of the wearer.
Some were fleece lined for winter conditions, some even had built in ear warmers, some were waterproof, and then there was the hat with a hard shell to protect the wearer from hard knocks when examining the confined spaces on ships. These are referred to as Bump caps..
